Blood pressure can have many
different effects on a body. Many people who consider blood
pressure think about hypertension – also known as high blood
pressure. However, low blood pressure can cause problems as
well.
Low blood pressure, also known
as hypotension, can be serious and should be taken care of
immediately. Having low blood pressure can affect the brain and
be an indication of more serious problems.
Hypotension is generally having
decreased blood volume which is known as hypovolemia. There are
several reasons that this may occur. Problems with the nervous
system in the brain and some medicines can have hypovolemia as a
symptom or a side effect.
Because low blood pressure can
have detrimental effects and because it can be the result of
other serious problems, hypotension is just as dangerous as
having high blood pressure.
One type of problem related to
hypotension that is orthostatic hypotension. This is also known
as postural hypotension and is one of the more common forms of
low blood pressure. It can occur because of a change in the
body’s position.
An example of orthostatic
hypotension would be standing up from a sitting or lying down
position, which can briefly but rapidly lower the blood flow in
the body.
As a result, you can become
dizzy. Some people notice this happening on a regular basis.
Another more serious type of this syndrome may be brought on by
certain medications.
There is another form of
hypotension that is less common than orthostatic hypotension. It
is known as postprandial hypotension and will occur 30-75
minutes after you have eaten. Digestion of food can send a
large amount of blood to the digestive system. Due to this, the
autonomic nervous system must compensate.
Hypotension can be just as
severe as hypertension. They are both cause for concern and you
should see your doctor regularly. Your physician should keep
you informed of your blood pressure and any other concerns, and
can give you advice on how to stay healthy or become healthier.
