There are many things that can
put you at a greater risk for high blood pressure. There are
also many reasons you may experience high blood pressure. It
has long been felt by many in the medical community that race
may be a factor in high blood pressure.
It is thought that there may be
some genetic factors that cause some races to be more
predisposed to having high blood pressure. Even if this were
true, there are things that you can do to help control your
blood pressure no matter what race you are.
One possible reason that race
may influence blood pressure is cultural traditions. A big
factor in high blood pressure is the food that we eat. If you
come from an ethnic background that celebrates every occasion
with high fat and high cholesterol meals, you will probably be
more at risk for high blood pressure.
If you belong to a culture that
has a tendency to eat foods often that are high in fat, you
might want to consider changing the way that you cook on a day
to day basis.
It is fine to continue family
and ethnic traditions for special occasions, just be sure to use
moderation. Make the infrequent indulgence perhaps just for
holidays, and keep an everyday diet that is low in fat and
cholesterol.
Certain blood pressure
conditions seem to be more prevalent for certain races. If you
are African-American or Hispanic, you may want to get more
frequent blood pressure checks.
A number of more serious health
conditions can occur if high blood pressure is not addressed.
If you are at risk, monitor your blood pressure carefully, eat
well, and exercise often. These are steps that anyone can take
to minimize high blood pressure.
