Relief from Arthritis Pain

Sixty-three-year old Alyce Kelso used to work from 10-12 hours everyday as a bus driver. However, her immune system went haywire; it turned on her own joints in her body. The condition was identified by her doctor as rheumatoid arthritis, only one of the many forms of arthritis.

Many people like Kelso are affected by arthritis. In fact, the condition is one of the most common forms of disease, suffered by more than 40 million Americans, including 71, 000 children. As the disease worsens, various essential components of the joints eventually get destroyed, causing lifelong pain, and in most cases, disability.

Many of those who suffer from arthritis eventually stop working. Some end up on a wheelchair because of decreased mobility in their limbic muscles and also because of muscle atrophy as a result of disuse. What makes it all seem even worse is that there is no cure yet for arthritis. It is impossible for science to grow back such biological components as cartilage and ligaments. Plus, there are certain types of arthritis that are so severe they also affect the spine and skin.

But patients with arthritis should not lose courage. The fight against this disease is not over yet. Just because there is no cure does not mean that you will be stuck forever suffering pain.

There are several methods available that would contribute to relief from arthritis pain. Most of them involve drugs and sometimes even surgery. However, if you are not comfortable with taking anything to relieve your pain, then we provide you with non-medicated methods that would help you achieve relief from arthritis pain:

Weight Management

It is a long accepted fact that observing proper nutrition and keeping a well-balanced dietary plan can only have a positive effect on your health. What is new, however, is that this kind of healthy lifestyle can also contribute to relief from arthritis pain through weight management.

In order to understand just how this works to achieve relief from arthritis pain, you need to remember that arthritis primarily affects the joints. The joints, where bones meet, are the major stress-holders when bearing weight (the knee joints particularly). So the heavier a person, the more stress you are actually putting on your joints.

People who are overweight have a substantially higher risk of developing knee osteoarthritis. So in order to achieve relief from arthritis pain, managing your weight through observance of proper nutrition is a great idea.

Exercise

Many doctors believe that weak muscles are a risk factor for osteoarthritis. This condition is often present before osteoarthritis develops. It has also been observed that weakened muscles contribute to progression of the disease. So in order to provide relief from arthritis pain, you need to develop these weak muscles. The best way to do that, of course, is through exercise.

The muscle groups you should be especially paying close attention to are the quadriceps muscles. These are large frontal muscles found in your thighs. A study made an observation that the weaker the quadriceps, the higher the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis.
