When Workouts Go Wrong: Aerobics and Injuries

Be sure you consult your physician before starting any new exercise regimen.

Aerobics are great exercises to get your heart pumping and your body sweating.  You can use aerobic exercise to lose weight, build endurance, and stay heart healthy.  However, if you are not careful, aerobic exercise can result in injuries.  Follow these tips to make sure you are exercising and using aerobics in a fun and healthy way for your body.

A primary consideration when doing aerobic exercise is your attire.  Wearing good shoes is important.  Aerobics involve lots of movement, so make you’re your shoes are in good condition and lace them in such a fashion that they will not come untied while you work out.  This reduces the chance you may slip or trip and fall.  You should also consider the articles of clothing you’re wearing.  Lightweight non-constricting clothing will help prevent you from becoming overheated.  Clothing should breathe well and be loose enough to permit movement but not so loose as to become entangled in machinery.

Another high priority consideration is your workout area, especially if you are working out at home.  Make sure that your workout area is large enough for you to move freely without running into anything.  It is also crucial to inspect workout equipment to make sure that it is in the best shape possible.  Machinery that breaks while in use will almost certainly cause injury.  The workout area should also be clean.  When you work out, you sweat a lot and breathe heavily.  If you’re doing that in a dirty environment, you might pick up some nasty bacterial or viral infections.

While it is important to push yourself in order to have the best and most intense workout possible, it is important not to overdo the intensity of your workout.  When you push yourself too hard you put may find yourself pulling muscles, experiencing cramps, or otherwise injuring your body.

Your doctor can keep you informed about how to stay safe while exercising. Remember to warm up and stretch prior to your workout, and take a few minutes to cool down when you are nearing the end of it.  Make sure you are doing the right kinds of exercises for your body, age, and gender.  Working out should help you feel better, although a few sore muscles are not unusual when you are first getting started.

Safety is important.  If you are hurt, you won’t be able to workout while you recover.  Missing out on days or weeks of training can undo the results and benefits of your hard work.  Your safety is as important to your health as your exercise routine, so take measures to ensure you are safe whenever you engage in an aerobic workout.
