Things To Know Before Breeding Your Cat

The population of cats is the United States alone is astonishing.  Nearly all experts will tell you that you should spay your cat instead of breeding it.

No matter what experts have to say, a lot of people want their cat to have a litter of kittens.  Before you decide to do this, there are a few things that you may want to consider.

Raising kittens takes time.  For about two months after the litter is born, time and attention will need to be spent keeping the area clean and watching over the kittens development.

Raising kittens also requires space.  You may want to strongly consider this if you have a small apartment.  If you have a family, make sure they are okay with the idea as well.  It is hard to keep kittens contained and they will roam all around your home.

Breeding cats and raising kittens requires a degree of responsibility.  It is good to decide beforehand whether or not you can keep a kitten that ends up not getting a home.  If you can't, you probably shouldn't breed your cat.

Breeding also requires some education.  You need to be prepared for any problems along the way, especially those that might take place during birth.

While most cats are able to manage pregnancy and delivery without much intervention, there are times when your help might be needed.  You should be aware of what a normal cat pregnancy is and watch for signs that your cat is having trouble.

If the trouble is bad enough, you also need to be prepared to take your kitty to a vet for assistance.

You’ll also need to know what to feed pregnant cats, as diet is important for pregnant cats to produce healthy kittens.  This is also a good time to learn about when and what to feed kittens.

Breeding has costs involved.  Food and vet bills are part of the cost, as well as advertising when it is time for the kittens to go.  Other things can come up as well, so be prepared.

There is a lot to think about before breeding your cat.  If you are sure you wish to do so, be sure that you get the knowledge and everything else you need beforehand.  Be ready to handle anything associated with breeding – and prepare yourself for the worst possible scenario.
