The first line of defense for keeping cats out of your garden
is to make sure that you have secure boundaries. If there
are any gaps in your fence, you should make sure that you block
them to prevent any low access.
Cats are very agile animals, and
can jump very high. They are also good climbers. You
may find a string or taut wire across the top the fence helps
with that.
If a cat has made his way into your garden, it may be difficult to
get him out. Many people choose to use dogs, simply because dogs
are known to chase cats.
Cats are known to despise water as well. All it takes
is a bucket of water or a squirt with a garden hose
to make a cat run away. If the cat enough times, he will
probably choose not to come back anymore.
Motion activated sprinklers work great for keeping cats out
of your garden. Once you install the sprinkler system, the detector will pick up the
motions from an animal in your garden and immediately shoot out a jet of water. In most cases, all it takes is a few exposures to
this before many animals learn to stay out of
that area.
There are a few things you can do to protect your plants. Mothballs are said
to be effective, and you can use
them around your plants, garden borders, and even along the
fence. There are other repellents you can use as well, such
as cayenne peppers, tobacco, lavender oil, citronella oil,
mustard oil, and even lemon grass oil.
Sound devices that feature high frequencies may also help to
keep away cats. The devices won't hurt animals - the sound
just annoys them - and they don't bother people at all.
There are several different models, such as those that stay on
all the time, and those that are motion detected. Make sure that the model you have
is strong enough to cover the entire area.
Commercial repellents are a less desirable method and should be
used only as a last resort. Due to their high chemical content,
commercial repellents can pollute your crops. There are several
varieties to choose from available at department stores.
If you have a garden, it can be annoying if animals decide to make your garden their home.
Secured the boundaries
around your garden, and try using water first as a deterrent. If
the water
methods don't seem to work, you can look into another method.
