If the definition for the term
intelligence was “the ability to acquire and remember
information and the capability to use it while solving different
problems”, then the cat is definitely an intelligent animal.
Put an adult cat in a room in
which she has never been before and watch. She will
inspect every corner of that room. This detailed search
gives her valuable information about the environment,
information that can even save her life in some cases.
Curiosity probably didn't kill the cat; on the contrary, it
gained her the reputation of having nine lives!
The intellectual capacity of
the cat is demonstrated through the ability to use information
to pass safely through certain situations. Cats also are
capable of forming “learning methods”, a characteristic that was
thought to belong only to primates.
Cats learn through observation,
imitation, and trial and error. Many people have heard of
cats being able to open drawers or cupboards, but there are cats
that can turn on the lights or use the toilet. Cats are
able to learn many things through observation.
Considering the fact that the cat is an intelligent domestic
animal, it is important to realize that there are also limits to
their cognitive processes. For example, one might confer
human motives to a pet when there are none, particularly because
cats can understand and respond to several human language
commands.
Cats can be intelligent and loving companions. Try to
understand your pet and act in a manner so that living together
is a beneficial experience for you both.
